Today will make for 5 days of winter weather in Metro Houston. Sure the people that live up North who read this are probably laughing to themselves, but we typically don't have these types of conditions until Mid January up until about Valentine's Day.

So far the coldest night of the fall was Yesterday December the 8th at 29 degrees. December the 7th we got down to 32. It's a nice sight to see the frost on the roofs and people doing a little bit of winter car care down South. Right now it's about 15 Degrees warmer than it was this time yesterday so the winds have already shifted back from the South and East and will remain that way until the passage of the next front.

This time of year our warm weather comes from the Winds from the West so it probably wont even break 70 degrees for the next 5 days or maybe until next Friday.

Also there was some well needed rain. It wasn't a big rain all at one time but a slow rain over a few days that should have been able to seep into the ground. I am tempted to go ahead and predict a snowfall or an ice storm sometime in January or February. It seems that there will be a few times were a separate LOW develop around Houston which will draw in cold air from Canada..and will also make for a monster East coast storm. Just my thoughts it's fairly easy to get an ice-storm down here but a lot harder to get snow. It only needed to have been 10 degrees cooler on that rainy day for it to have been an ice issue. Now if the weather pattern changes then no..but if it stays the way they are running now yes. Got it?

So an ok weekend is coming up. Might get a tad windy towards the end as the next cold front approaches. Then there will be the typical rain chance when it passes then the cycle repeats itself. We are still too far out to see what it's going to be like on Dec 25th. I remember growing up back in the 80's that we would always get an Arctic blast right after school let out but that stopped happening in the early 90's.

Someone did the rain dance last night. Well someone has been doing the rain dance all weekend because we will get rain today. The last few fronts that have come through Houston Metro have helped ease the drought. The reason is because the front are running about a week apart. If you look back or keep track of everything you will see that we have had a cold front just about every Tuesday or Wednesday since about the start of October. Having these front come about a week apart with winds off the Gulf of Mexico for a week provides enough moisture and instability in the atmosphere so that when the next front approaches we get heavy rain or Thunderstorms. (I am sure Mrs Lamb my English teacher would cringe at this run on sentence..RIP)

So there are two lines of Thunderstorms that we will have to deal with today. They may merge and form one line but this is going to be a rainy morning. Most of the rain should be cleared from the area by lunch time and then it will just be cloudy.
Possibility of Tornadoes and straight line winds maybe a little bit of Hail. Usually after November the severe weather threat will drop with the passage of fronts but we still have to get through the end of the month.

I promise you two nice days before the clouds and the chance of rain returns again. If you are doing the Turkey Trot your run will be perfect.

This weekend will be a re-peat of last weekend. Warm and humid with a chance of light or passing showers each day. Morning clouds in the morning but the sun will eventually prevail.

The next front is coming sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday. I am prepared at this time to say that THANKSGIVING will be nice and pleasant weather. I am almost 100% sure of this. If something changes between now and then I will be sure to let you know. If you are running the Turkey run on Thursday Morning it should be clear and cold in the lower 40's.

What a nice weekend!

So it's that time again. What will the weather hold for Houston Metro this week?

It's officially upper level low season. Starting a little early this year and will go through about mid February. Pacific storms off the Coast Move from West to East so that is what we have to look forward to. It was interesting that one of my friends flew into LAX on Saturday and was dealing with rain. It usually takes about 3 days for the weather to get here from California. That will put the system here Starting Monday night with the worst weather on Tuesday with a gradual clear up Wednesday with the arrival of a cold front.

So the weather forecast for all the runners and those who enjoy the outdoors is, basically to have a rain coat or umbrella handy through Wednesday. As always when a front comes through we will have at least 2 nice sunny days after the front passes. So Thursday and Friday should be nice with high in the low 70's and lows in the 40's.

The low temperature this week was 38. So we got a little colder this week from last weeks 39.
The high temperature this week was actually today at 83. It's humid and the dew-point is at spring time leaves.

Beware of severe weather. It's perfect weather for November tornadoes or Thunderstorms with straight line winds. Everyone thinks our tornadoes come in the Spring by our tornado months are March and November.
Everyone in the greater Houston Area should get at least .50 inches of rain this week with up to 3 inches in some areas.

The Weekend Weather for Houston Metro.

Get out and enjoy the nice weather. It will be fairly mild and warm days with cool nights. Saturday should turn out nicer than Sunday so GET outside but both days should be nice overall.

11-11-11 was the 100 year anniversary for a Rare Strong Arctic front to move across the United States. I don't see any ARCTIC air coming down anytime in the next 5 days. I also don't see any fronts on the map as of yet. Something interesting was the huge storm in Alaska. Usually when we get our weird winter weather it originates in Alaska so it will be interesting to see if this will affect us sometime later this week or next weekend. I have not heard anything about it yet. Also around this time of year when it's warm for several days, we often have severe weather with the arrival of the next front. November is our tornado and severe weather fall month. Usually we get a really strong front on Thanksgiving week. It is still too far out for me to let you know. I'll come out with the Thanksgiving next weekend.

Did you remember to fall back?

First off the weather for Houston, Texas.
We've had two of our coldest mornings so far this year. The low on Nov 4th and Nov 5th were both 39 degrees. It was a very short lived event as the winds have turned back from the South and now it's what I call open your windows weather. There is no need to turn on the A.C. and there is no need to turn on the heater unless you are just one of those "particular" people.

The upcoming week calls for very warm days Sunday through Tuesday. There is another front that will arrive sometimes between Tuesday and Wednesday that will drop temperatures back down to more seasonal levels. Until then you can look forward to mild nights and somewhat warm days that will start off with a little fog and low clouds. After the front comes through it will be clear with mild days and cold nights. Since this front is coming through on Tue or Wednesday I can't predict what the weekend will be like since this front is coming a little off schedule. Also working on Thanksgiving and Black Friday forecasts but at this time it's still a little far out. Enjoy the weather. I mean it got up to 109 this year...so don't complain enjoy it. That is why we live where we live November - March BABY!!!

Can you believe that is is already November?

Countless turkeys across America are being slaughtered and processed as I type. Alright, enough of the mass murder of innocent turkeys. Well I don't even like turkey. It's always so dry. Does anyone know how to cook turkey that isn't dry? If so please invite me over for dinner on 11-24-11

Oh yeah this is supposed to be about the weather right??

A rather strong Pacific Front is going to be moving through the area this evening. It's already snowing again in Denver Colorado. No snow for us. Just the chance of rain and then a rather windy day tomorrow. Tomorrow may be a repeat of last Friday. Just a cold cloudy windy day but it all depends on how quickly the system clears the coast. If it moves quickly we will see the sun tomorrow, if not we won't. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns into another travel nightmare for the Northeast...but no one has predicted that just yet. Thursday: Windy Cold. Friday: Very cold in the mornings clear sunny skies high about 67. Weather temps are on target so far. The first frost can occur down here anywhere from Oct 29-Dec 17. The last few years we always get a really strong Canadian front the week of Thanksgiving. I think we are on track for that. So tomorrow no short mini skirts or exposed skin just a light jacket or a sweater that can be removed once you get to your destination.

I logged on to Face-book this morning and saw several posting about people changing their Sunday plans because it looks like it is going to rain.

Well looks can be deceiving. If something does fall from the sky it will be nothing more that a light drizzle. October and February are what I call teaser months along the Texas Gulf Coast. Basically this is what happens. We get a cold front. The clouds move out and then we have like 2 or 3 nice days with no clouds. All of the moisture is pushed offshore and sits there until the High Pressure moves far enough away that the winds turn back from the South and East. Once this happens the clouds and moisture that have been sitting off-shore return as low clouds. Usually cloudy and gloomy looking in the morning eventually gives way to a sunny afternoon. This may repeat each day until the next front passes through. A few times a year during the winter months when the water gets really cold and we get a Pacific Front...and we warm up to a temp of like 80 in January and then drop down to about 45 at night..seems to be the magic number...we will get sea-fog or some of the foggiest mornings that we ever get here. But for now it's just low clouds...do not equal rain...usually.

Next frontal system set to come through here sometime around Thursday. Usually these front are every 5- 7 days. If we can keep them on the same schedule we are set to have a nice weekend Winter..where every weekend is nice and sunny. As long as the front continue to move through our area on Thursday or Friday we will always have a Sunny Saturday or Sunday...yes it's true.

An interesting experience yesterday in the grocery store. The price of Coffee and Sugar are at an all time high. The price has gone up on both items about 45 cents since the last time I purchased these two items. I decided to save a little bit of money and buy the store brand of both items. The reason is supposedly climate change, yet those two items are not really affected by the climatological changes . Also there was a report on a major network that cake mix boxes have gotten smaller yet prices have become more expensive. Was the consumer notified? No.

I remember when you could buy a Hamburger Helper box for .99 cents.
I also remember getting a gallon of gas back in 1999 for .79 cents.
Also the price of milk is sky high and even higher if it's Lactaid or some other kind of special milk. So now every American is spending double the money that they spent 10 years ago on basic things such as milk and eggs. So when you get your annual review and you get a raise it covers the difference in the egg prices. Lets say you have chickens and you don't have to buy eggs? Well the chicken feed is 50% higher than it was 10 years ago. And you have to buy organic chicken feed so you can sale the organic eggs. It's like the snowball on the cartoons that keeps getting bigger and bigger as it rolls down the hill. Something to ponder.

Those of us who went to school 10 years ago were not aware of the way things would be now. I don't think inflation is taught in school. I am sure it is mentioned but there really isn't any guidance as to what to do about it. Who knows what the future holds for us or for the kids who are going to school now. Just another thing to ponder. The stagnation and constipation that is inflation.

Something else to ponder....two non white candidates for President of the United States of America. Is this Political progress or Political strategy? Or will it be Rick Perry with Cain as vice president? The odd couple just like Obama and what's his name..oh yeah Biden. I am politically neutral but these are my thoughts. With the three branches of Government it really doesn't matter who is elected President everything will be the same or when the president leaves office unless Congress or the Justices are overhauled which is not possible. So 4 years from now we will be pondering over these same issues again..because the 999 plan or the 777 plan will never be passed.

Just about a month after the official first day of fall, we are officially getting our first few days of fall in Houston Metro.

The days will be pleasant and the mornings will be cool. The one major event with the first significant cold front is the winds will be strong out of the North for the first two days.

Typically the winds are not a big deal, but because of the dryness just one simple spark could ignite a forest fire.

The Return of Running Weather

Rain!

So there was a line of strong storms that formed North of Houston and moved South.

For some reason unknown to us the line Broke up over Intercontinental Airport but continued to move to the south. There was not much rain today inside of the loop but lots of rain outside of the Loop today. (The loop is Interstate 610)

The whole point of this post is that we will have our first Temperatures at night in the 50's for most of the nights starting Saturday as long as the winds are out of the North for the next 3 or 4 days. This usually happens the first week of October. So despite global warming we are still on track this year with our temperatures despite the fact that we are way below on rainfall, and way above average on temperatures.

Very interesting weather. If you have ever been to the desert and if you've seen what happens in the desert after a hard rain. Well we are about to experience that here.

Get your allergy medicine. Everything will bloom...and all the pollen levels will hit the roof, but it is nice to get the rain. It usually takes about 3 -5 days before all the plants go crazy. You have been warned.

Nothing much to post on here. Weather wise we did get some rain yesterday 09.17.11 here in the inner-loop Heights part of Houston. A little over an inch. We have not had an inch of rain at one time since sometime in 2010. No Joke.

There was a brief passage of a cold front which moved out as a warm front quite rapidly so there were no overnight lows in the 60's since my last post. This is also one reason we got the rain. The frontal boundary sort of fell apart right over Houston.

The first day of fall is around the corner so we should start to get more fronts as the days get shorter. Yes it's 740pm and it's almost dark now. The days are getting shorter. Looking at the weather maps it looks like there should be a front passing through here sometime by Thursday. It more than likely will be a Pacific Front so don't expect anything too dramatic temperature wise. The average day for first temps at night to fall into the 50s is October 7th.

Come on 59 degree nights!

The clean side of the storm

Tropical Storm Lee

Sept 3rd 2011 and I am on the clean side of the storm. The clean side of the storm is the opposite of being on the dirty side of the storm. The dirty side of the storm is always the East of the storm. For instance with this storm the dirty side of the storm is anywhere from Lafayette La to the East. The clean side of the storm is from Beaumont TX West.

We were on the clean side of the storm in Hurricane Rita event though a lot of people East of the city were on the direct path of the storm or too close to the storm for it to actually be called being on the clean side of the storm. We were also on the clean side of Hurricane Andrew when it hit La.

So what does all this mean? Basically tropical cyclones are the Earth's way of cooling itself. That being said Houston is probably going to get it's first cold front sometime early this week. Night time lows in the upper 50's to low 60's in the first week of September. Why? The slow moving Lee and persistent strong winds from the North will pull any weather systems that usually would move from West to East will actually pull them South. There is a cold front coming out of the Rockies that will just so happen drop South.

September:
I think we are done with our 100 degree temperatures.
We are still in the peak of Hurricane season here until about 9/25.
If we can get the cold front to start dropping through here on the average of every 7-10 days that will greatly reduce the change of a Hurricane hitting the Texas coast and will shift the focus to La and Florida. A storm like Ike traveling all the way from Africa has a higher probability of moving along the frontal boundary instead of making a bee-line straight to a certain area.

For those of us who run in the South it's the beginning of fall racing season and marathon training. Next week the mornings will be nice and cool so get out there and enjoy it. After the summer of hell waking up to 60 degree temps will feel oh so damn good.

The official High Temperatures Sunday June 5th 2011 and Monday June 6th 2011 were both 105 degrees.

Both are record High temperatures for this date and the warmest temperature ever recorded in June.

Note the hottest temperature ever recorded in Houston is 108 degrees.

Just thought I would put this information on the blog tonight.

If you have noticed it has been a dry heat and not a humid heat which does not feel as oppressive as a wet heat.Having only 6 inches of rain all year there is so little moisture in the air, ground, in the plants that everything just warms up quickly and that may be a reason for these unseasonably hot temperatures this early in the summer.

Oh yeah and it's been raining a bit here and there but you already knew that was going to happen..I put that in the last post.

Interesting fact about today.

Today was the first day since weather has been recorded that Houston reached 100 degrees this early in the season.

This usually happens when we have High pressure and Northerly or winds from the West. Today it happened under mostly calm winds or winds off the Gulf.

Today at 10pm driving home my car said that it was still 91 degrees.

I have decided to beat the heat and learn how to swim this summer. Hopefully the mayor hasn't closed down all of the pools.

Interesting June Facts...
Tropical Storm Allison is the only Tropical storm to ever have it's name retired. It caused 42 deaths and over 5 billion dollars worth of flooding damage to Houston.

June is typically the wettest month in Houston.

June is usually when the sea-breeze showers begin to drift in daily. (I think this year it will start early next week and may provide a little drought relief.)

The perfect day...or not..

Today was perfect. I mean the weather was perfect. It doesn't get much better than it was today.

You can kiss those those 40 degree mornings good-bye. It may happen once again this spring but it highly unlikely. In a few days the humidity will be unbearable again.

Personal Update: I am working. So far so good.
Unemployment: All I have to say about this is that the system sucks. I applied for unemployment soon after my job ended and it took 45 days for someone to even contact me or get an update online that my claim was being processed. For people that are not cheating the system that sucks. I mean if I did not have friends or family what would I have done..stand out on the side of the road with a sign? So I think that the system bites..oh I already said the system sucks.

I am running again. I don't know but for some weird reason running and my melatonin/lunesta combos are the only thing that keep me grounded. The more I run the better I feel. It's my drug for now...the running that is.

Also you have noticed that there is more music on the blog right now that actual entries. I love music. Music is a major part of my life. If you listen to words of the songs that I post on here most of them are telling a story about my life. For the most part the music will be positive or upbeat trance music but occasionally it will be just real life depressing music. Life isn't always happy.

Despite what your car thermometer has been telling you we have not officially hit 90 degrees yet. I think this past Saturday as I was leaving softball practice the car told me it was 90 degrees. According to the reporting station at I.A.H the warmest it has been this year is 86 degrees. Typically the first 90 degree day in Houston is sometime during the first week of May following the passing of a cold front. The winds will generally blow out of the West that time of year. Winds out of the West that time of year equals a dry heat. The less moisture in the air the warmer it will get. Blah Blah Blah.

So the April showers brings May flowers does not apply here. This must have originated up North somewhere. January and February showers equals March and April flowers. You probably have a little more than a week left before the Bluebonnets start to die off or loose color so get out there and take some pictures.

It will not freeze again here until sometime in the fall. Although there have been freezes and very cold snaps as late as mid April I just don't see that happening this year. Most of the cold weather will stay North of Interstate 40. So if you been holding off planting melons or anything that doesn't like cold weather go ahead plant plant plant. It's getting kind of late for tomato. If you want tomato buy a plant from a nursery do not plant seeds.

Might get some rain tonight. Actually the best chance for rain in a while followed by several nice days.

Adventure tomorrow is the Sam Houston Port of Houston Boat Tour. I will be sure to take pictures.

Discovering Houston

Ah

So the Final Four is coming to Houston. Lots of people will be coming to town with nothing to do. Of course they can go to the Galleria. They can also go down to Space Center Houston, or the N.A.S.A. complex. I've often been asked what else is there to do in Houston? My answer is stay in the air conditioning during the summer and spend as much time outdoors when the weather is nice in the fall and winter.

Everybody knows that I still live here because of economical reasons. I can live here and travel to all of the pretty places and come back home. I can't afford to live in the pretty places right now so I live here.

So I have decided to take it upon myself to see what Houston has to offer. I mean I travel all over the world to see other cities, people, and eat food. Why not do that here?

Well since I am not working right now everything is going to be free. Today I went to the Houston Arboretum and Nature trail. I have no clue why I have never been here. I only live about 3 miles from the entrance gate and it's free. Maybe because I am always working and don't have any time. Yeah that's it. It was in one word awesome. You forget that you are in Houston except when you hear the occasional 18 wheeler on the 610 loop. The tall pines rival those of the forests of the Southeast U.S.

Just a little blogging before my Melatonin kicks in.

Has been a fairly uneventful week. I wake up early. I take a nap in the middle of the day and I go to bed around 12 midnight. It's called no work. I look for work in-between all of this. It's kind of like I am free but I will need money eventually. My friends have been taking me to dinner so that is nice. Friends = food.

My two cats are keeping my company.

Thursday- Going to dance. There is nothing else to do and it's free.
Friday Night- Playing softball till I get tired.
Saturday- I am running a 10k race. My first one since last year.
Sunday- Playing softball..and the post softball activities. So it's basically all day of softball and then a crazy night at the bar.

I am up late tonight on a Friday night. I don't really know what to write. I am not sleepy yet so we will see what pops into my brain.

So I am 30 years old now. I like the fact that I still get carded most of the time when I ask to buy something alcoholic. Other than that I don't really enjoy the age or the number. I can still double my age. 30 + 30 = 60. Maybe I will still be alive at 60, but you never know. I am being a little more spontaneous and doing things that I would not have done a year or two ago..life is short and I just want to enjoy it.

Since return from vacation life has been super crazy.

Running has been my therapy. It seems to help me stay balanced and battle my addictions/emotions.

Running helps me cope. Like when I got the text message this week that my ex my first love is in a relationship with someone else. Not sure if I was more upset that this information was relayed to me via text message or two days before I was supposed to visit. "Oh you can't visit because I am seeing someone" W.T.H who does that? I went for a run and I felt better. For most people this would be no big deal, but for someone like me I have a hard time letting myself love people. I have only ever loved two people in all my 30 years and to find out that one of them was moving on was just a huge blow to me, because I always thought you know. So the other person that I love we will see what happens. Life is too short to love and not be loved back.

Running helps me manage my temper. Like this week when I was let go from my job. Why was I let go? Oh because we don't know we just don't like you. No no it's because we hired this new under qualified person so we can't afford you anymore. Or maybe because all Psychiatrists are crazy, and they prefer to play mind games. So when you call me in your office and tell me it's just not working out but we are going to give you severance pay because we really don't have a legitimate reason to let you go..I just take a deep breath and say "O.K. here is your key." Then you want to continue the lecture after you've let me go and expect me to sit there and listen. Nope. If I wasn't running I am sure my exit would not have been as calm as it was, but thanks to running I was able to just walk out...nothing was broken..no bad words were spoken.

Running makes me happy. The occasional runner's high is a better high than any synthetic man made drug.

Running saves me money. Instead of paying a Therapist $90.00 an hour I just go for a long run and I solve my own problems. At 28 years of age I found out that I have high blood pressure. Running keeps me off of the expensive high blood pressure medication. I'm addicted to running so I am not spending money on drugs.

I'm running for my life my friends.

Case Del Caribe

This is where I stayed while I visited Puerto Rico.

A friend recommended this place. When I travel alone I really don't want to spend too much money on sleeping. I will often stay at a hostel or some place really reasonably priced. I don't need all the amenities etc etc because I am just going to sleep there.

I could not find any online reviews about this place or anything which was kind of frustrating so I just went with what my friend said.

This was the perfect place for me. It is located in the Condado area which is a good area for night life. Anywhere that you want to go is withing walking distance. The cab fare to the airport is about $16.00. In the morning they have a breakfast service that starts at 7:30 and lasts until 9:30.
The set up is basically a house that has been converted into a small hotel. You have to have a key to enter the property. The property is landscaped well. The staff stays on-site at the property from 7am until about 5pm. The room is average size. There is a ceiling fan. The furniture has Caribbean accents. The restroom has been remodeled. There is a window unit in each room should you be unable to handle the Puerto Rican heat.

For me the place was perfect. It is not a place for high end travelers. I heard several people complaining because they were expecting more. So I am just going to list the cons here so that you will not make a mistake and book here. Again I could not find any reviews on the internet about this place so I will write my own. The manager is aware that I'll be writing this and if you book there because of this review let him know.

1) I would not stay here if you have a car. Parking on the streets is hard to find and the walk can be long if you are not used to walking. The parking I believe is $5.00 a day. The parking is basically a long driveway. There were several times late at night when people were trying to come and go but they couldn't get the car in or out because there was not enough space. I could hear all of this because I was in Room 2 which is right near the driveway.

2) Oreo the cat sometimes will meow late a night. Can be a little annoying if you are not used to cats.

3) There is some sort of bird that they have caged in the front that sings from the moment it wakes up until the moment it goes to sleep. The sound can be minimized by requesting a room in the back of the property as the bird is in the front. Again I was in the room 2...near the bird cage.

4)Bring some non scented off. There are mosquitoes in the room and on the property. Your trip will be more enjoyable with some non scented off.

5) Sounds. If you have a long night and want to sleep in it's basically impossible. The staff when they arrive speak in Puerto Rican (They speak LOUDLY) If you are not used to loud people you won't be able to sleep in late. If for some reason you do not go out at night and you are in your room, it will feel as if you have gone out. The streets get packed and the street outside of the property is usually blocked with people playing loud music and honking the horns. You will also here police sirens as the police are trying to clear the traffic.

6) Water. The water pressure is nil. Don't flush the toilet or run the water in the sink while trying to take a shower. The shower will drip until the toilet fills up. Also as I've encountered on several tips to the Caribbean it takes a good 5 minutes for the water to get hot.

Other than that it was perfect. I enjoyed my stay. I think they cater to a certain type of people. I would not stay here if I was traveling with kids or if I was traveling with a girlfriend/boyfriend....unless that person were exactly like me and didn't mind dealing with the little inconveniences.

Next trip will be to Bogota, Colombia.

So everybody wants to know what happened to the snow?

I guess I can say the same thing that happened to Hurricane Rita. I went somewhere else.

Why?
Upper level disturbance did not drift far enough South.
There was not enough moisture in the air. The dew-point was hoovering around 15 all week when it normally averages around 55 in the winter time. Low dew-point equals a less than likely chance of snow/rain for Houston.

Usually for snow events in Houston the precipitation arrives first followed by the cold air, and it usually just doesn't get cold enough to support snow. This time the cold dry air arrived 2 days before the precipitation and the weather disturbance just wasn't that strong enough to produce the snow. It was snowing but the air above was dry so the snow melted and then froze upon contact with the frozen surfaces. (Freezing Rain)

This system will strengthen as it moves across the Eastern United States along the Jet stream, and will grow into a powerful storm that will effect the East Coast in a day or two.

So there was snow, it was just about 150 miles away from Houston. Long range forecasts are showing a possibility of a repeat performance mid week. As I always say as long as the winds are coming out of the North during the winter it actually is cold here. When the winds return from the Gulf it won't warm up like it usually does because the water has had a chance to cool.

Winter came a few days late

So now it's cold again. How long will the cold last? Just a few days. As usual when the winds are out of the North the weather will remain cold or at least cold at night. It's when the winds start to come from the Gulf that the temperatures warm up again.

After two nights of freezing weather on Saturday and Sunday the warm up will begin until the next cold front passes through. Sunday morning and Monday morning will be perfect mornings for cold weather running. It might be a little windy Sunday morning but the winds should be calm on Monday morning. If the winds are calm on Monday morning everything will be covered in frost. If you don't have covered parking might have to wake up a little earlier to remove the frost from the window. Please use cold water..do not use hot or warm water unless you want to crack the windshield.
By Wednesday temperatures during the day will be back in the low 70's.
For some reason this year it gets cold but the cold weather doesn't last. Also the really cold weather is staying to the East this year. It has also been dryer than normal, so I don't think that it will snow this year. I think if anything does happen this might be the year of the ice-storm.

My sister is supposed to be flying to NYC on Monday morning. We will see what happens with that. It's the time of year when the Low Pressure systems that form over Texas ride the jet stream up North and give the Northeast a big snow event. Hopefully she won't have any flight delays.

Running Weather Houston

The weather will be very unusual for December. Not unusual temperature wise but exceptionally dry. Enjoy the dry weather while it lasts. Usually this time of year the Pacific cranks up sending moisture this way, but for some reason that has not started yet this year.

There are a few systems off the California Coast but for some reason it doesn't look like they will bring us any rain.

Monday through Wednesday Highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's...October weather in December. It should not rain but might be foggy some of the mornings as this winds return from the Gulf of Mexico.

Basically it's going to be a week of mild weather. It's not going to be super cold or anything like that just a consistent cold nights and cool days. The winds will remain out of the North for about 5 days or so, so there will not be a warm up until the winds return from the South. So unlike the last few weeks where it has been cold for a day or two and then it gradually warms up..this week it will just remain cold/cool.

Drive to California

So I finally drove to San Francisco California. It was an interesting experience.

I could have taken I-10 all the way to LosAngeles and then taken the 5 up to San Francisco, but of course I had to take a different route.
I've always wanted to drive to the West Coast but never really had time time or energy to do the trip. A very good friend of mine moved to the Bay Area and had left her dog behind. After living without their baby for a while they decided that they wanted her back. So part of the reason for the trip was to bring Maxine to them. Maxine is a retired Greyhound. Rental car was a KIA Borrego.

TEXAS

Left Houston on Saturday morning 11/20/10 around 10am. Took interstate 45 North to Dallas. Took I-30 West to Ft. Worth and then 35W to 287. I have been to Dallas several time but never to Ft. Worth. I would suggest anyone going to the Metroplex take a little time out to visit Ft. Worth, it looks like an interesting city. Going North West on 287 we stopped in this little town and had some Pizza. It was a not a typical pizza chain and the lady running the place was Asian. I can't remember the name of the pizza place or the name of the town. It was our first stop for gasoline.
Continued driving 287 north to Amarillo. Went through Wichita Falls. From Wichita Falls continued the long drive to Amarillo.
First night stayed at LaQuinta Inn Amarillo Airport.

LaQuinta is very pet friendly. So for those of you doing road trips with dogs or cats you will not have any problem with Laquinta. You just need to sign a waiver and agree not to leave the dog alone. Or if you leave you will need to put out the do not disturb sign so that the housekeeper will not enter. If you leave and the dog start to bark they will call you and you have ten minutes to return to the hotel.
This LaQuinta wasn't the best place. It was nice for a motel but they are an "OUTIE" which means that you enter the rooms on the outside. A major pet peeve was that the curtains did not close all of the way so the room did not get dark at night and when a car drove up the lights would light up the whole room.

We left Amarillo on Sunday 11-21-10 around 8:30am.
Headed West on I-40.
The Panhandle of Texas is flat with nothing to see. We did come to our first wind farm about 20 miles outside of Amarillo.

New Mexico

Crossed into New Mexico on I-40. Had to stop for gas soon after crossing the border. This was our 2nd stop for gas since leaving Houston. Up until that point the KIA was getting really good gas mileage. Once we entered New Mexico we had to deal with a major wind storm. This storm lasted for the remainder of the drive this day. The Highlight of New Mexico for me was actually Albuquerque. It just looks really nice and a paradise for someone who likes the outdoors. Once we were out of New Mexico it was just wilderness for the rest of the drive with an occasional town or gas station. We stopped in a little town for gas and also lunch. It was a Chinese Buffet for $5.95. It seems like everyone in the town knew each other. For me the buffet was ok but Rafael did not like it. It seemed like every small town no matter what size all had some type of Chinese Buffet.
What I remember about New Mexico was the railroad. The interstate runs parallel to the Burlington Northern and SantaFe transcontinental rail line. Also we passed the Volcano Mt. Taylor. So it was very interesting to see the black lava fields. Also the continental divide was in New Mexico.

Arizona

We entered Arizona with blowing winds and dust. Tumbleweeds running across the freeway like crazy. One thing about tumbleweed is they look very strong but when you hit them they shatter. Northern Arizona is beautiful that's the only way to describe it. About 20 miles after crossing the border we entered the mountains and it was less dusty but still windy. The KIA was equipped with a outside temperature reader. As we got closer to Flagstaff it started raining. The temperature dropped from about 50 to about 34 in about 15 miles. Then there was sleet and then there was snow. When we arrived in Flagstaff the city had received a dusting of snow. For people from Houston any type of snow is cool. We stayed the night in another LaQuinta.

This hotel was perfect and if I ever come back to Flagstaff I will stay there again.

Once we checked into the hotel it started to snow. It snowed for a few hours. When we woke up in the morning everything was white. It was the first snow of the season for Flagstaff so everyone was out walking around and taking pictures. For us Houstonians we were not prepared for the snow. I had to use an old folder to scrape the snow off of the front windshield so that we can drive. Defrost does not work. You have to scrape the snow and ice off.

We left Flagstaff on Monday 11-22-10 around 10am. Gassed up at a gas station in Flagstaff. All the way out of Arizona there was snow in the mountains. The snow on top of car lasted all the way until we reached the California border. Once we got out of the mountains of Northern Arizona was were ushered back into the desert.

California

Crossing into California was the only state line crossing with a river. We crossed the Colorado river to enter into California. After crossing into California you are stopped by an agent that will ask you what you are bringing into the state. It's not the border patrol or anything like that. Actually if you want to avoid border agents I-40 is the way to go if you don't mind going a little bit out of the way.
I-40 from the state line to Barstow was nothing but desert. We stopped at a gas station outside of Barstow for gas at 3.60 a gallon. You never know when the next gas station is going to be so you have to stop and get guess when you can. We stopped at a Mexican Restaurant in Barstow. Outside of Barstow we got on Highway 58. Drove North towards Bakersfield. We passed Edwards Air force Base..the alternative landing site for the space shuttle. We also passed the airline graveyard. The place were all the retired planes sit in the desert. You have to cross the mountains to get into the valley. The snow level through the mountains was only about 1,000 feet so we had another chance to see snow. Once we entered the valley there was nothing but fruit trees and farms. Bakersfield was overcrowded and needs a major freeway. Too many small streets with too many cars and nowhere to go.
We were supposed to stay the night in Bakersfield but I was getting tired of driving and did not want to spend another day in the car so we kept driving. We hit interstate 5 outside of Bakersfield and started to drive North towards the 580. There is nothing on I-5 it was worse than the desert. Just orchards on one side and Mountains on the other side. Had to stop for gas again at some point. Finally hit the 580. Instead of taking the Howard/San Mateo bridge headed towards downtown Oakland. Came into San Francisco over the Baybridge at Night. Awesome. Stopped at Carl's Jr about a mile from my friends house. Final destination Heather & Jimmy Foster City California.

Change

Some people,animals, or just things adapt to change very easily. I've never been the sort to adapt to change easily or quickly.

So, two big things changed since my last blog update.

My good friend moved to California and my grandmother passed away.

The thing about my friend in California is that we can still keep in touch via the blog,email, or a trip. That's not really a problem, but the face to face conversations will be missed. So to my friend in California living the good life I miss ya but still love ya.

The things about my grandmother is, she isn't coming back and there is no way for us to communicate. I'm not the sort to seek help from those who talk to the dead. It's just not my thing. The way that the society is now we are so busy that we don't make time for other people. We work because we have to work. When the weekends come we want to rest because we are so tired from work. If we are not resting we want to have a little bit of fun so that it doesn't feel like all we do is work. Or maybe we live far away unlike the old days when extended families all lived in the same town..and maybe you just don't have time to visit.

I got to see her before she died. I got to see her with a smile on her face despite all the tubes. I refuse to have those memories erased by an open casket viewing or the site of the coffin. Yes, I am anti funeral. It's my choice but I don't want to remember her that way. Probably will never go back to visit that house. It would be too hard. I think I get all this death weirdness from mom.

Weather-

So it's raining again. Basically High pressure that was over us for a week has moved off the West a bit. Remember that the winds and storms around a high pressure system rotate clockwise around the High. So any weather that forms along the upper Mississippi Valley will roll on down through Arkansas,Western Lousiana, and then enter into Eastern Texas...that's the patter for the next few days.
There are also a few tropical waves moving across the Atlantic that will need to be monitored.

Thunderstorm 101

You come to the blog and you say is he ever going to write about running again? Sure, maybe, of course...but everybody knows I run the most in the fall and winter and the summer I like to hunker down. It's just too hot and humid for all of that running.

I started to watch the sky around 5:30 today. I could tell it was going to rain I just didn't know when and where. There was Thunderstorm North of the Heights when I ventured out to the post office and to grab me a bite to eat. I thought that since it was more than likely a sea- breeze storm that it was going to drift off to the North. A sea-breeze storm forms when wind from a large body of water meets wind from a large body of land. The storms will always move away from the water. So in this case the storm would be moving North...away from the Heights. Well two things came together in perfect unison to produce a fairly heavy rain event. The storm North of the heights produced an out flow boundary. An out flow boundary is a current of air that moves away from the storm. When this happens the storm began to back build which means the storm was moving North but redeveloping in the South. So a line of storms developed from North of Houston and extended down South towards 59 down to Sugarland and this whole system is moving North. Anywhere along this path will get several inches of rain in a short period of time as the same storms move over the same area. The Tropics
Very Very active. Keep an eye out for soon to be Alex. If this wave which I am predicting will become Alex doesn't get into the Gulf and become Alex there are several waves behind it all with a chance to become a strong tropical storm or the first hurricane of the season...but my bets are on Alex which is not Alex at the moment but should become Alex before the weekend is over.

I looked out my window and looked into the sky and saw something you don't see much in summer time in Houston. Cirrus clouds. We usually get these clouds in the winter usually behind a cold front on relatively clear days. Or maybe you are like me and when you fly you can only sit on the window seat. If I can't get a window seat I can't fly...anyways when you are 35,000 feet and you have a nice flight you are often flying below the cirrus clouds and the view is very rewarding. In the summer time in Houston most of the cirrus clouds are the left over part of the anvil cloud from a dying or dead Thunderstorm. The sunlight was just right and so the ice crystal were reflecting the light. That's the beauty of weather, it doesn't matter where you are..there weather will be.

Speaking of weather...

A change in the weather pattern here for the Gulf Coast. High pressure has moved out of the area and we will be getting a more Easterly Flow. It means that anything that forms in the Eastern Gulf will move in this direction. The next two afternoons once it gets hot enough showers and thunderstorms will fire up and move across the area, so it's probably better to get your run in the mornings through Thursday. The storms that form in the evenings will have the potential to bring heavy rain fall.

Speaking of rain....

Look back at one of my older blog posting. Remember I mentioned something about another reason to be watching Africa besides the world cup? The cluster of storms that moved off the African Coast is now passing over Haiti and the Dominican republic. From here it will go towards Cancun Mexico and then enter the Gulf of Mexico. I mentioned that this would probably happen even though the weather people who make a lot of money said that it would probably not hold together. So things could get interesting for the Gulf Coast once the weekend is over. Just the possibility of a a hurricane or a very strong Tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico with the oil spill is quite disturbing. It is very rare for a system to come off the coast of Africa and make it to this part of the world this time of year. Most of the storms develop from an area of disturbed weather in the warm waters of the Caribbean, of Gulf of Mexico. If it does make it from Africa this time of year usually the wind sheer or the high altitudes of the mountains in the Island will weaken the storm. Another weird fact. Hurricane Ike entered the Atlantic Ocean on Sept 1 as a cluster of Thunderstorms and hit Galveston on Sept 13 as a very strong Cat 2. Where will Alex go....not sure yet?

Hot and Steamy

So what is the forecast for the weekend? Two words. Hot & Steamy. Might have a small chance of rain but more than likely it will be a dry weekend.

Lots of tornadoes in the Northern Plains this week. As we get closer and closer to summer and as the season progresses the Tornado risk switches to the Northern United States and Southern Canada..yes Canada. It's all about where the moisture from the Gulf of Mexico meets the cooler dryer air from the North..frontal boundaries differences in dew-points etc etc....

The rainy season is about to begin for the Caribbean. The first Thunderstorm cluster to come off of Africa has traveled across the ocean and will be impacting Puerto Rico today and will continue to move Westward. The smart weather people are saying that it only has a 10% chance of becoming a named storm.

Not sure what happened with the Boston Celtics...they should have one that game.

Not sure what happened with the last goal in the USA/SLOVENIA game..that last goal should have counted.

All Eyes on Africa

All eyes on Africa.

Yes all eyes are on Africa as one of the Continents countries is hosting the World Cup, but there is another reason to look towards Africa.

It's June and the Tropical Waves are already coming off of the African Coast and headed East towards the Americas. This usually doesn't happen until late July or early August.

So many this year will be busy just as they are predicting. Just maybe ...time will tell. Keep an eye out for Alex. That will be the name of the first storm.

One reason that these storms form is supposedly the Earth's way of cooling itself? After running today I think she deserves a little bit of cooling..

Record Low/ High Temperature.

Record Low/ High Temperature.

What does that mean? It means that the last two nights here the low temperature set a record as being the highest low temperature ever recorded on this date.

This usually doesn't happen until late July or August. The reason that is happened in June is High pressure to the East is pulling in deep moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. The more moisture there is in the air, the higher the temperature will be at night. The less moisture there is in the air the temperature will be warmer in the day but cooler at night. So even though the temps have been in the low 90's the last few days the night time temperatures have been around 80-82 when normally they should be in the low 70's.

If you spent anytime outside the last few days doing any type of physical activity you were probably drenched in sweat in less then 10 minutes. Yesterday the dew-point got up to 77. I checked all the reporting weather stations around and the only other place that had a higher dew-point than Houston was Calcutta India.

Repeat action today? Maybe.

The storms for yesterday will make for a very humid morning today. The winds are out of the North and West which will quickly warm up the air and lower the humidity. Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far with temps in the 90's by 12 noon.
Once, it warms up again today storms will develop in North East Texas and will move down in this direction. Anything that develops will have a tendency to become rather severe rather quickly. This will be the same set up for Sunday and Monday. So get out and enjoy the mornings and early afternoons because the storms will generally come through after about 5pm.

Fist named Tropical System?

Maybe. There is a disturbance off the coast of Central America that is supposed to move into the Gulf Of Mexico or Carribean Sea. Worst case senario in my opinion would be this storm moving over Haiti. Even if it's just a bunch of rain it will devastate the country. Right now the forecast is more towards Florida and the keys.

Look to the North for Rain

So Summer is almost here in full force.

You might be wondering when it is going to rain again. Well the weather is changing again, and the answer is to look to the North for rain. Over the next few day the upper level winds will be blowing from North to South around an area of High pressure. That means that any Thunderstorms that form in Arkansas or Mississippi or anywhere Northeast of here will work its way around the high pressure system and move into our area.

You may notice that the nights feel a little cooler and the days are a little less humid. Both or the result of dryer air from the North and not moist air from the South. You will also notice that the clouds that do form are flatter and that there is more haze or smog in the air.

So lets see if we can get some rain it's been almost two weeks.

Amarillo to Houston

How long does it take to travel from Amarillo to Houston?

Normally it takes about 12 hours I think.

There is a cluster of Thunderstorms forming near Amarillo that is expected to ride the upper-level winds and if they hold together they will roll through Houston sometime this afternoon or evening.

There are no highways or roads to follow so could be as early as 8 hours from now to about 12 hours from now if it holds together. Also storms that blow in from North Texas in the afternoon or evening have a high tendency to be severe.

Summer unofficially began today in Houston.
Yes I know the unofficial first day of summer is Memorial Day. Yes I know the first day of the real summer is June 21. We've had the heat. We've had the humidity, and now we await the mosquitoes. These flying blood suckers need standing warm water to lay their eggs in. So once the sun comes out again and it stops raining and the drain pipes cease the follow the mosquito invasion will begin.

So why did it rain today?

Well, we've got a front dividing Texas in half. Higher dew-points on the eastern side of the front lower dewpoints behind the front. Basically moist air on one side dry air on the other side. There are also upper lever air disturbances traveling along the front from West to East. One of those disturbances broke off today and moved from Central Texas through East Texas and will probably rain itself out over Louisiana tonight.

When all is said and done today will probably go down as one of the wettest May 14th at either Hobby airport or Intercontinental.

What can you expect for the weekend?

Possible repeats of today. The mornings should be fine, but once the day warms up and the convection gets going if storms do form West of Houston they will form a line and move through just like today.

I hope that makes sense and even if it doesn't it just means that it might rain every day in the afternoon this weekend.

Where did April go? Did the April showers that were not, will they gave way to May flowers?

I hate the month of May, I just hate it don't really know why. Maybe because you officially have to start running the A.C. in your home unless you want to walk around naked all the time. Well that might not be a problem for some people but I prefer to have some clothes in. In the winter time it's nice to get rid of the clothes and make some nice body heat but in the summer it's already too hot...ugh get off me I don't want to cuddle.

The first 90 degree temp of the spring summer season is usually the first ten days of May, although it can come as early as February or March. It will hit 90 this week the further away from the Coast that you are. So at Bush Intercontinental Airport it will hit 90 this week.

May weather predictions: Drier than average. Hotter than average.

Side point...so are they going to rename the airport and called it Bush United International Airport? Continental is in the name of the airport, but when you add the name intercontinental it bascially means anything spanning several continents.

What about the oil spill in the Gulf Of Mexico? Houston and the upper Texas Coast is safe for now due to the prevailing winds around this time of year. With the weather systems generally moving from West to East the oil sheen is headed towards the mouth of the Mississipi and might make it as far over as Pensacola Florida. If they don't get the leak capped off before June that we might have a problem along the Texas Coast, because that is when winds start to blow from the East out of the Gulf towards..and tropical storms for the most part move in a Westernly direction

Not much running to report. I've been doing other supports which is leading to injuries. May body is used to running and nothing else so when I try new things I get hurt. Right now it's my left knee. So one of my goals this morning it to hit the weight room and everything ready to go.
